Devil’s Throat Cave
Devil’s Throat Cave is located in the Western Rhodopes, 17 km from the city of Devin. It is among those caves that do not offer dazzlingly exquisite rock formations. What entrances visitors is the possibility of embarking on a real journey of discovery, partaking of a mysterious and awe-inspiring underground kingdom. The cave’s entrance resembles a devil’s head, and down its throat rushes a massive waterfall that from ancient times has captivated imaginations and given birth to numerous legends.
It is an arresting fact that nothing carried into The Devil’s Mouth Cave by the river emerges from it. Many attempts have been made to track pieces of wood and other material through the cave, but they all vanish without a trace on the underground river, arousing curiosity and tantalizing the imagination. Experiments performed with dyes have shown that it takes more than 1½ hours for the water to traverse the short distance from one opening to the next, fueling speculations about an extensive system of underground streams in the cave.
There are three carvings in the walls of the caves that are particularly noteworthy. The first is a likeness of a devil’s head located near the entrance to the cave, just before entering the Hall of Thunder. The second is the full figure of a man done in a Classical style, carved into the rock face of the Hall of Thunder.
The Yagodina Cave
The Yagodina Cave is located in the Buynovo Gorge near the Rhodoope village of Yagodina. It is one of the most famous and most-visited caves in Bulgaria. Its galleries extend to a length of 8,501 meters, which makes it the 4th longest cave in Bulgaria and the longest in the Rhodopes. The temperature in the cave is between 6 and 8 degrees all year round, and it has a humidity of more than 90% (as do most caves).The next hall is The Wedding Chapel, where couples can exchange their matrimonial vows. It is fitted with an altar and attractive wall decorations to lend the hall a more ceremonial appearance.The itinerary continues for another kilometer, affording visitors the opportunity to observe almost every type of cave formation, but most impressive are the many cave pearls.
„Uhlovitsa“ cave is a show cave in the Blue Pools Area (Bulgarian) in the city Smolian of the Rhodope mountains, southern Bulgaria. The cave is close to Mogilica village and 37 and 47 km away from Pamporovo and Chepelare respectively. About 3000 tourists visit the cave every year.
Uhlovitsa is about 460 m long, 330 m. of which are well-explored and developed. It is 1040 metres above sea level. The average temperature is about 10–11°C.
Many corallites can be found in the cave, as can an impressive flowstone formation known as the Icefall at its end.The cave was discovered in 1967 by Dimitar and Georgi Raichev. The name Uhlovitsa comes from the word "ululica", meaning Strix
